How the New Definition of Happiness is Radically Changing the Workplace
How the New Definition of Happiness is Radically Changing the WorkplaceHow the New Definition of Happiness is Radically Changing the Workplace Sheryl Connelly is the Corporate Futurist at Ford, charged with compiling emerging trends with big implications for the automaker and the world at large. Her annual Looking Further With Ford report explores the top 10 trends from Connellys research. Here, she breaks down the macro forces that led Baby Boomers, Gen Y and Millennials to define happiness differently and how thats changing not only Ford but the future of the workplace.Glassdoor What does a futurist do? And why does Ford need one?Sheryl Connelly I think of it as the longest education Ive ever had. I spent the first year on the job just reading. I know that doesnt sound glamorous, but you need to understand a lot of areas at a deep level to make discoveries. At the core, youre looking for patterns. You want to start a conversation, create food for thought, abo ut whats coming in the next two to fur years or so or maybe beyond. We do that in a lot of different ways. A trend is holistic . It isnt tech or social or economic it permeates everything. And thats why you have to read everything. I go to the annual teddy boy Talk conference, read academic papers and McKinsey whitepapers, look for provocative articles, talk to everyone I can. You need to get all points of view, from gender, age, ethnicity. I like for someone to say to me, No, thats not right. You have to push deeply to uncover patterns and why theyre occurring.Once you start looking at the world through trends, you cant stop binnenlandseeing them. Like when I was pregnant I noticed pregnant people everywhere. When you hit upon something, you start to see it all over and you can build on that. We also have strategic partners who help us narrow it down to the top 10 trends for our Looking Further With Ford annual report.People sometimes flip through the report and say, Theres not t hat much about cars in here. But again, all of these trends cross everything. Its part of the bigger picture. You cant build the next car for the next generation without deep understanding.Glassdoor This years report talks about work-life balance through the lens of what happiness and prosperity means today how the definition is shifting compared with previous generations.Sheryl Connelly Older cohorts can help us better understand our past, but the younger cohorts tell us how to look forward. It applies to the nature of work and to car sales at the same time. Start with Baby Boomers. Big growth of the population after World War II, as any soldier who fought came home to the G.I. Bill. Take this money and go buy a house or a business or go to school. So this generation only knew a time of economic growth theres money to be made if you work hard . And there was this idea of the company man If something happens to you, we as your employer will take care of your loved ones. So peopl e gave their blood, sweat and tears in exchange. That meant giving up time with loved ones. The focus was, look at what a good provider I am We have cars and TVs and large houses.Generation X came of age during a recession. They were born in the age of the women lib movement, and they were referred to as latchkey kids because there was no one home to greet them. They become the MTV generation because they watch TV after school and see these rich and famous people around the world. They become interested in experiences, not material possessions. They know how awful it was to be separated from their parents all the time. No one would hire them so they started their own companies and they were careful not to do it the way the boomers did flex time and job sharing . Prosperity becomes about family time and the experiential. If baby boomers never used their vacation and were the last to leave, Gen X says I wont give you all this office time but I will give you response time. They work on holidays and weekends and work/life lines get blurred. Now we have the millennial generation, or Gen Y, who are about ages 21 to 36 now. Theyre a hybrid of the two generations before them. Echoing the boomers, they were told they would do well if they worked hard. But they might be underemployed and saddled with debt so like Gen X, theyre seeking experiences. They want to explore. Prosperity is now about living nimbly and having choices. You can see how this applies to Ford. A baby boomer might say the car is the ultimate status symbol. Gen X would think of it as an item that needs to protect your family. And Gen Y sees a car as optional. I think for the younger ones, 21 and younger, vehicle sharing will just get bigger. People simply want to move from Point A to Point B and that might be with a bicycle. Its just a transformative time in transportation.Glassdoor What are the other top trends youre tracking when it comes to work and career?Sheryl Connelly Historically, weve enco uraged people to find their niche. But I see opportunities for the generalist. A lot of the careers being displaced by automation or technology are the ones that are specialized accountants are being replaced by TurboTax , lawyers by LegalZoom .The new female frontier is a wonderful thing to watch unfold. Women have achieved record levels of personal and professional success. And I also think some of those accomplishments are happening because mens roles are changing. A study asked men Were money no object, would you like to be a stay-at-home dad? And 50% said yes. Women have come a long way, but we do still have a long way to go.Going back to the evolving definition of prosperity, I also really like this notion of time well spent. Time is now a currency , with high value and limited availability. We found about 72% of adults globally say their definition of wasting time is different than it was before. And 56% of U.S. adults think sleeping is a productive use of time, which some people from previous generations likely wouldnt have agreed with. It all goes to show prosperity is continually being redefined. The older generations say, The younger ones will never have what we had. It costs so much more to buy a house. Maybe they wont have as good of a life. But, by whose definition? The big house wasnt the dream of the generation that started the tiny house trend.Glassdoor What about your own dreams? You probably didnt grow up wanting to be a futurist. How did you get here?Sheryl Connelly Im just as astounded as anyone that I can call myself a corporate futurist. When I was young I wanted to study art, but the worrier in me thought I should major in finance. Afterward, I went to law school and got my MBA at the same time. I try to be as candid as I can talking about this because I had lots of moments of self-doubt . I practiced law long enough to know I had made an expensive mistake . But, you know, I met my husband in law school. And it helped inform th e way I think. So you cant regret anything about the path you took because it led you here, to this moment.I started at Ford selling cars to dealers. And wow, are they extraordinary. Oil runs through some of those peoples veins. So much of what I know about cars is from them. But honestly, I just didnt have the affinity for the product the way they did. It wasnt the right fit and I knew it. There was a particular time that I deliberately decided to make a change My father died unexpectedly, soon after my second daughter was born. I learned a lot from him and I decided the first job that came my way within Ford, I would take. Luckily, it was this global consumer trend and futurist job. I look back at it as a divine intervention. Its the day I won my own personal lottery.Id had all these degrees but now I had a way to apply it all. I had to build up a point of view, and research and make a case around it like a lawyer. You have to persuade like a salesperson. I felt I was in over my h ead, but over time I grew to love the job and Ive had it for almost 14 years. As awesome as the job is, it isnt easy. I love sharing the results in conversations like these. Its funny When I started in this role, I was advised not to share anything publicly. Over the past decade, thats changed completely. Since weve unveiled ourselves to the world, our perspective has become that much better.

Five easy ways to be more successful by listening
Five easy ways to be more successful by listeningFive easy ways to be more successful by listeningListening to others and respectfully adding yur own input is a key to success at work. If you dont take the time to hear out those you work with, you risk alienating yourself from the team and losing out on all the smart ideas you could be collaborating with them on - because your ideas, your voice, and your own concern with how you appear is causing them to stay silent.Heres how to become more aware of the messages you potentially send others when yours is often the only voice heard in the room.Listen to yourself firstOne of the hardest parts of being a good listener is learning to shut up and let someone else have the floor. It requires a certain generosity of spirit letting the spotlight shine on other people. How do you know if you have it?If youre agonized when someone else is talking and youre not, youre lacking this generosity. Its just as bad if youre in a conversation and youre just waiting for someone else to finish talking so that you can jump in again - to direct the conversation back to yourself. If youre in a conversation or a meeting and every statement you make starts with I, then youre not listening Youre broadcasting. And when youre in groups or meetings, start keeping track of how often each rolle speaks. Are you the dominant voice in the room, but not running the meeting? Then everyone is hearing from you way too much. This takes self-awareness, which doesnt come easily to everyone its easy to get into a groove or fall in love with our own ideas because, after all, they are ours, and to champion them to the ends of the earth.Thats fine, if you want to go that route, but it cuts us off from others. Humans are social, and speech, when its done well, helps bond us. If youre talking when you should be listening, youre telling people you dont care about their ideas and youre missing out on friends.Listen, process and ask questionsThe best way to beco me a good listener fast instead of making declarative statements, stop and assume you dont everything. Chances are, you dont have all the information you need.Instead, ask questions.Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman wrote a Harvard Business Reviewarticleabout their analysis of 3,492 people in adevelopment program designed to help managers become better coaches. They tried to judge which managers were better listeners. In every case, the better listeners were the active ones, who didnt just sit across from someone, but actually asked questions. They found that people perceive the best listeners to be those who periodically ask questions that promote discovery and insight. These questions gently challenge old assumptions, but do so in a constructive way. Sitting there silently nodding does not provide sure evidence that a person is listening, but asking a good question tells the speaker the listener has not only heard what welches said, but that they comprehended it well enough to want add itional information.Good listening was consistently seen as a two-way dialog, rather than a one-way speaker versus hearer interaction. The best conversations were active. So dont just launch words at people make sure youre understanding what they think.Dont be afraid to call yourself outBecoming a better listener is a process, and it can be hard work. The chances are that if you go down the route of trying to be a better listener, people will support you. But even the best listeners sometimes backslide into not really paying attention to what people are saying.Paul Donoghue, psychologist and co-author of Are You Really Listening? Keys to Successful Communication with Mary Siegel, told U.S. News World Reportabout what to say when you find yourself slipping back into your old ways.Even if youre mid-sentence, catch yourself. Here I go again, giving advice, he told he site.Check out their point of viewA conversation is, at its root, a way for two or more people to share information. If youre the only one speaking, youre not learning. To create stronger connections with people, make an effort to understand who youre speaking with.Paul Sacco, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work told HuffPost about how to empathize with the person across from you. Its as simple as putting yourself in their shoes.Spend a moment putting yourself in their position, whats going through their head and what it must be like for themUnderstanding what their experience is even before you talk to them can help you connect with them. And it sounds bad, but even if you blow it, youre still better off because the other person will see the attempt, Sacco told the publication. There are specific techniques you can use to show youre trying to see someone elses point of view. One good option repeat what they said and ask if you understand it correctly. You just said youre unhappy where you are. Im hearing that youd like to move on to something else. Is tha t right?Put your listening skills to the testIf taking up conversations with mostly your input is a habit of yours, you might want to give this a try.A Forbes article features a listening skills exercise that requires you to summarize what you just heard. Its a good way to make sure youre really listening. For at least one week, at the end of every conversation in which information is exchanged, conclude with a summary statement. In conversations that result in agreements about future obligations or activities, summarizing will not only ensure accurate follow-through, it will feel perfectly natural. In conversations that do not include agreements, if summarizing feels awkward just explain that you are doing it as an exercise, the article says.Being a better listener will show others that your care about their ideas and contributions - at work, socially, or at home. The benefits are better relationships and a greater sense of appreciation for the people around you. Its hard to argue against that.

The majority of Americans take a staycation. Heres how to do it right
The majority of Americans take a staycation. Heres how to do it rightThe majority of Americans take a staycation. Heres how to do it rightDuring the summer months, offices empty out as employees seek out well-deserved rest from the drudgery of work. But while some of us may be flying off to exotic locales, the majority of us are not leaving our zip code. Thats whatnew data fromYouGov Omnibus found whenthe research service pollumineszenzdiode over 10,000 Americans about their summer vacation habits. More than half - 53% - of Americans reported that they had taken a staycation, or chosen to stay in their same city for a vacation.Although a staycation may not sound as luxurious as a getaway, its leise a privilege to take one at all. Forty-one percent of employees said they felt guilty or had been shamed for taking one. Its time for us all to get over this guilt and take vacations however we can because they are a proven benefit to employees and employers. The employees who take time o ff are the ones who earn the top performance reviews, one study found. Heres how to achieve the rejuvenating effects of a vacation even when you do not leave townLeave your phone behindA staycation begins by disconnecting yourself from work. Delete the Slack app from your phone, create an out-of-office email reminder, and do whatever you can to let your colleagues know that even if you are physically nearby, you are mentally checked out.Stopping yourself from scrolling through your devices can help you, because looking at technology can undo your vacation benefits. When you look at your email on vacation, you are less able to remember what exactly you did on your holiday. The simple act of unplugging can make a big difference in your perspective when you return back to the office. A2012 studyfound that employees who psychologically detach from work are more satisfied with life and return to their jobs more engaged.Go outside into natureEven if you do not leave town, you can still go beyond the familiar walls of your home and get a change of scenery. Nature is a proven way for us to get relaxation benefits. It does not take too many trees for natures spell to take effect. A 30-minute walk in the woods has led tolower blood pressure and stress levels in Japan.Do your version of relaxationEach of us has a different definition of what time well spent on vacation means. For some of us, it means exploring new cuisines or catching a theater performance or spending time with our loved ones. In one survey of 1500 U.K. people, one in ten people over 65 said that tasting new foods and drinks welches the most enjoyable part of their holiday break. For some of us, we do not even have to leave our couch to achieve a vacation state of mind. Finding me time to watch our favorite movies at home is enough.Take advantage of the fact that a staycation can help you get into relaxation mode sooner. One of the benefits of a staycation is that you do not have to deal with the stress of faraway travel logistics. As my colleague Meredith Lepore, who recently took a staycation of her own, put it Being able to walk to my destination with only one small overnight bag was utterly delightful compared to the hell I put myself through when I overpack. The point of a vacation is to take time off to reflect and enjoy the parts of yourself that are not tied to work. Staycations remind us that we do not need fancy activities and faraway getaways to do this.

Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writing
Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writingResume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writingResume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writingRecruiters attitudes vary extensively, depending on the industry. A candidate applying for a job requiring creativity, such as an interior design firm may have it easy landing an bewerbungsgesprch using an online generated resume, as they come in various attractive templates from which to choose. Other recruiters, however, are more comfortable going through a resume that has been written from scratch. A basic background research will help a potential candidate to land the dream job they are seeking.the courtesy of A.Meyer unsplash.comResume Builders through the Eyes of Recruiters Survey FindingsSusan Adams, an editor at Forbes, notlagees that recruiters will spend about 6.25 seconds going through a candidates resume. This is according to research done by TheLadders.com, which also ranked professionally rewritten resumes at 60% score, which is highe r than amateur resumes at 40%. The study notes that recruiters prefer the former, due to their better organization and readability compared to those written from scratch. The Ladders examined 30 recruiters over a period of 10 weeks using eye-tracking software to note how they reviewed resumes. Ladders charge a total of $395 for a professionally written resume, clearly indicating that this fee may not be favorable to many.Recruiter Table Battle Generated Resume vs. Written From ScratchDespite the statistics above, Susan Adams argues in favor of traditionally written resumes. While interviewing Jim Borland, a New York career coach, they both agree that it is best to write the resume yourself, as the interviewing panel may reveal that the professionally written resume is clearly not yours. Adams concludes that it might be helpful to consult a career coach or research and utilize a good online sample to do your resume, rather than have it written by online resume builders.Form vs. Subst ance What zugreifbar Resume Builders Can and CantOnline automatic resume builders are great tools to use to get a quick job done. However, using them requires that you proofread for any errors. The candidate should be sure to get right the names of previous employment companies or any other relevant information. Furthermore, some resume builders usually ask for specific information to fill in the different sections. In this case, a problem may arise where one tries to upload a previously done resume, which may prompt you to try a few more times before it is accepted.Resume builders usually present the complete resume in a different format from that offered by applications such as Microsoft Windows word. annahme an kindes statt problems can come in where one intends to download and edit it on his/her PC. Perhaps the worst downside to it is that you will not necessarily learn how to write a CV after using an online resume builder, despite the fact that you have to input the necessary information you would like included on the resume. In spite of all the disadvantages, online built resumes continue to trend within the business world, with more recruiters adapting to the changes. Online builders can make your resume stand out from the rest, using graphics and attractive fonts. Also included, are candidates strengths, and experiences where recruiters are keen to look. With easy access and necessary process to complete the resume, online resume builders are likely to gain recognition and popularity over traditional resumes.Limitations of Online ResumeAs online resume builders gain more popularity in job searching, they have also faced various shortcomings which have either lowered their credibility or their reliability. First and foremost, online resume builders may face the challenge of limited fonts and formats. A potential candidate might be forced to choose from the available designs which may fall short of a companys expectations. Moreover, these formats may be different from those offered in applications such as Windows Microsoft Word, which may make further resume editing an uphill taskSecondly, online resume writing is limited to those with access to technology. Since technology is readily available in many affordable forms such as smartphones and tablets, adoption of the online resume trend will remain limited to those who can access supporting technology. Finally, online resume writing systems may bring with them logistical complications. The availability of technology means that the best-suited candidates may have their CVs done online while living halfway around the world, saying that jobs applied over a great distance have minimal opportunity for a more personal interview.Pros and ConsOnline generated resumes are mostly stylized, made custom depending on the industry where one is applying for a job. These resumes are therefore attractive at first glance and appealing to the interviewing committee. If there is one thing that online resume builders are good at they do their research extensively. Most of the reputable sites are well versed with the trends in resume writing and are thus aware of what the companies prefer. These sites are keen to highlight the candidates key strengths using beautiful subtle graphics. Showing up at a job interview with an online generated resume will more than likely boost a candidates esteem, as it easily stands out from traditionally written resumes. On the contrary, Online resumes also fall short of a few credits. These resumes are specific to certain industries, meaning that not all the employers favor them. It may be a disappointment to be turned down even before the interview day, so a background research may be helpful to reveal if a company is receptive to CV writing or not. A potential candidate may come across as less professional if the enterprise prefers traditional resumes to online generated ones. The candidate may as well miss out on certain opportunities, as the desi gn of an online resume is likely to expose employment gaps. Finally, not all sites give a free service. The added cost of a professionally written C.V may restrict them to those who can afford them.In conclusion, theres a blurred line that separates the resumes produced by online builders and those written from scratch. Its not easy to say with certainty which one is preferred over the other, as some employees would rather go the traditional way. The method used depends on the companys preference where a candidate is seeking a job.

Show, Dont Tell How To Show Your Skills On A Resume
Show, Dont Tell How To Show Your Skills On A ResumeShow, Dont Tell How To Show Your Skills On A ResumeWe all have that one friend in our social circles. The one that seems to have a big fish story for every occasion and that never met a partieal brag they couldnt top with their own self-aggrandizing story. Maybe they claim to be best friend second cousins with the hot up and coming movie star. Maybe they were THIS close to scoring an internship with the presidents bodyguards sisters company. While we, unfortunately, know enough of these types to fill the page of our little blog post, the point is that no one likes to talk about, interact with or otherwise be around the person that talks the talk without walking the walk. When it comes to your skills, accomplishments, and experience, much the same can be said for your resume and your chances of scoring a job interview. No pictographs or elaborate diagrams required, instead, we have helpful advice for how to show off your skills on a re sume in a way thats impactful and helps land you the new position youve been dreaming of.Facts, Figures, and OutcomesIf youve heard it once youve heard it a million times. One of the biggest ways to make an impact right from the get-go in your resume application is to include quantifiable statements, goals, and accomplishments. Its one thing to say that youre an excellent employee with high attention to detail and an ability to get things donebut our mom tells us were awesome too.Instead of using broad adjectives without context, consider listing out major accomplishments, goals, and projects achieved with success. You can tout your attention to detail and hard-working attitude all youd like, but stating that you increased sales performance year to year by 40% is a cold hard number that kompetenzprofil employers can get behind and understand. Similarly, if you regularly accomplish tasks ahead of schedule, try adding in cumulative project days saved over the course of weeks, month or a calendar year. While both methods convey the same information about your candidacy, spelling out facts and figures allows a potential employer to more thoroughly understand just how your contributions could positively impact their bottom line.References Speak WondersSure, your resume may be chalk full of the biggest and best of your accomplishments, but how did you get along with your coworker and did you leave your work environment worse or better for your time in the office? Written work histories are an essential part of any job hunt, but they only go so far in conveying what it is that makes your individual application and history the perfect fit for an open position. The best way to get this vital information across is with the use of quality references.A good reference is more than an internal HR contact that confirms you punched in and out daily. Be sure to pick professional colleagues who are familiar with the nuances of the work you performed and that are ready, willing and eager to point out just what made you exceptional. These soft promos by those that know you best often make a bigger impact than the resume itself. Be sure to ask your references permission to use their name and contact info and keep them generally apprised of the interview process so that they know to be expecting a call. With any luck, youll have numerous contacts pitching your candidacy to the hiring manager in no time. Its all in the (Applicable) SkillsIf theres a theme to be had from todays Simply Hired career advice blog its targeted focus on applicable skills. Much as you shouldnt be throwing out adjectives like candy, make sure that the skills, experience, and qualifications you do list on your CV apply to the job at hand. Carefully review the job listing for the position for which youre applying. Most postings will specifically list out a set of minimum, desired, and ideal skills and experiences which theyd like to see in qualified candidates. Once youve identified these key areas, its off to the races and time to fine-tune your resume to draw attention to the areas where youd make the perfect fit.One of the areas you can feel free to devote less time to on the resume are soft skills. These interpersonal abilities to communicate, guide, manage and adapt to stress are often better addresses in the interview room. A key line or two regarding high-pressure projects or a mention that youve managed teams of X number of people will hint at your capabilities, but this is definitely an area where the proof is in the pudding and best demonstrated in person. As a final note, remember that resumes should be snapshots of your suitability for a potential position but certainly arent the be all end all when it comes to landing a position. With that in mind, help yourself and your interviewer out by giving as many concrete examples and real-life scenarios as possible. This will not only help the decision makers get a better sense of your candidacy, it will also al low them to better picture you in the open position increasing your chances at scoring an interview or job offer in the long term.

The REAL reason for work-life imbalance (and 3 solutions)
The REAL reason for work-life imbalance (and 3 solutions)The REAL reason for work-life imbalance (and 3 solutions)Overwhelmed, scattered, totally worn out. Does that ever sound like you?Even though youre committed to work-life balance, sometimes equilibrium isnt as easy to find as youd like. Most advice suggests that you set boundaries, manage time better, and practice self-care. Yes, those are important. But if youre juggling a hundred balls, you need an overall strategy to calm things down - not just tactics that give you mora to do.Consider the possibility that you can have work-life balance with a simpler (and even counterintuitive) approach.Where your balance (and imbalance) actually comes fromIts easy to look at your emails, phone calls, meetings, and to-dos and believe that they are the problem. Everything coming at you is just too muchBut whatever imbalance you see in your outer world is actually happening on a deeper level. In other words, if the outer events of your life fe el overwhelming, thats a sign that youre living out of balance on the inside. Fix that and the rest will follow. For a moment, step away from the urgent rush (nothing will explode, promise) and balance your inner world with this simple process.Heres how to find your inner balance - in 3 stepsWe each have three primary reasons for being hereLessons to learnExperiences to haveService to giveWhen you live true to your threefold purpose, you feel balanced and fulfilled. If you can consciously identify your personal reasons, youll know what to focus on and how to move forward to create the balanced life you want to live.1) Identify your lessons to learnAsk yourself a simple, direct question What lessons am I meant to learn in this life? What answers come to mind? Welcome all of them. This question might sound simple. But by asking it, you open yourself up for surprising answers to present themselves.Honestly, most people hesitate to ask this question. They believe that all life lessons hav e to involve pain and hardship. That may have been true for you, but it doesnt have to stay that way moving forward. What if your lessons involve how to create more balance? What if your lessons involve an important conversation that improves your work life? Or even a career change? What if your lessons include starting a business or a non-profit?If you frame your life in terms of lessons to learn rather than problems to solve, you will find balance more naturally and easily.2) List your experiences to haveIn this case, experience means opportunities to become more aware, more conscious, and more awake to the world in which we live. For some, an important experience is traveling. For others, its spending time with certain people or building important relationships. Desired experiences could involve developing talents or reaching a personal goal. And yes, important experiences to have can absolutely be professional. What do you want to experience professionally so that you make a contri bution through your work?Ask yourself Which experiences call to me?And then (this is the important part), respond to your answers. Many of the experiences we want to have feel new or vulnerable, so we avoid them. If you ignore them or prioritize your to-do list instead, your life will start to feel small and your work will feel out of balance.3) Get clear on your service to giveYou have unique gifts to offer this world. When work-life balance feels shaky, its easy to think, I dont have enough time or energy to give to anyone else. How could I possibly fit that in?How are you thinking of service? Donating money or volunteering might come to mind. Those activities are important, but consider that service isnt always that obvious. You can offer service right where you are, right where you work. For example, you may have an animated personality. Instead of trying to stifle it, greet people with enthusiasm and lighten their day. Or maybe your knack is plans and details. Use those gifts to h elp your gruppes big project stay on track. When you live true to yourself, youre able to serve others everywhere, without even trying.Ask yourself What service do I naturally offer?Opportunities to serve will show up on the paths where you work and live.Serve from your authentic self and youll feel energized. The journey will become less of a task list and more of an opportunity to be your best self.Ah. That feels better - now what?Remember The balance you experience in your work and life starts inside.Yes, set your boundaries and practice self-care. But first, before you take other work-life balance advice, point yourself in the right direction. Know why youre here. Your inner balance is a stabilizing force that no time-management strategy can ever compete with.Carol Tuttle is a teacher, speaker, energy healer, online influencer and pioneer in the field of personal development. The Worst College Majors for Your Career
The Worst College Majors for Your Career The Worst College Majors for Your Career Not all college degrees are created equal. When it comes to choosing a college major, itâs important to look beyond your four years in school and consider how the degree will impact your career in the long term. If you are taking out student loans to pay for a college degree, itâs even more important to ensure that the degree will ultimately enable you to pay off your loans. Of course, itâs not just salary that can make a degree a poor choice. âWorstâ is, of course, a subjective term. Some might define the âworstâ major as one leading to a job with low pay. Others might prioritize work/life balance, or job satisfaction. The following college majors have been examined from all angles, from the lowest pay to the highest rate of unemployment, and more. While reading about the reasons various college majors are thought to bethe worst, consider that there might actually be a good reason to choose one of these majors along with several reasons to think twice. Pros Choosing a worst major thats considered under-represented by a school can give students an edge in terms of acceptance and financial aid. Cons Graduates may experience a low sense of meaning in post-college work. Jobs in the degree field may have low starting and mid-career salaries. Jobs for worst majors wont appear as often in job postings and will likely have poor job prospects. College Majors With the Lowest Early Career Salaries PayScale surveyed 2.3 million college graduates in their 2017-2018 College Salary Report. To determine the early career salary of each major, they looked at employees midway through the first five years of their career. According to this study, the following majors had the lowest early career salaries. (Note that the data set is limited to individuals with bachelorâs degrees only, and does not include data from individuals who went on to earn higher degrees.) Rehabilitation Services: $30,200Veterinary Technology: $31,800Child Family Studies: $32,000Early Childhood Education: $32,100Child Development: $32,300Printmaking: $32,400Christian Ministry: $33,400Bible Studies Theology: $33,500Christian Education: $33,500Youth Ministry: $33,800Social Work: $34,000Pastoral Ministry: $34,500Wildlife Fisheries Science: $34,700Human Services: $34,700Human Development Family Studies: $35,000Early Childhood Elementary Education: $35,000Paralegal Studies: $35,100 Human Ecology: $35,200Therapeutic Recreation: $35,200Educational Studies: $35,400 College Majors With the Highest Rate of Unemployment Of course, if you canât find a job in the first place, your starting salary is a moot point. The National Center for Educational Statisticsâ report on the unemployment rates of 25- to 29-year-old bachelorâs degree recipients by field of study lists the unemployment rate by major and notes that the average unemployment rate for all majors was 3.5 percent. Itâs important to keep in mind, though, that your ability to find a job after graduation can depend on a variety of factors, such as the state of the job market at the time you are looking, your internship experience, and your references. These 20 majors had the highest unemployment rates: History: 4.8 percentComputer and Information Systems: 4.8 percentCriminal Justice and Fire Protection: 4.6 percentLinguistics and Comparative Language and Literature: 4.6 percentEnglish Language and Literature: 4.4 percentPhysical Sciences: 4 percentPsychology: 4.4 percentPolitical Science and Government: 4.2 percentSociology: 4.2 percentFine Arts: 4.2 percentPhysical Fitness, Parks, Recreation, and Leisure: 4.2 percentCommercial Art and Graphic Design: 4.1 percentEconomics: 3.9 percentCommunications: 3.7 percent Finance: 3.7 percentMulti/Interdisciplinary Studies: 4 percentBiology: 3.3 percentBusiness Management and Administration: 3.3 percentMathematics: 3.2 percentMechanical Engineering: 2.9 percent College Majors With the Lowest Degree Satisfaction In a recent study, Sokanu looked at how satisfied people were with their choice of degrees or education. âSatisfactionâ could be determined by a number of factors, from job prospects, to pay, to work conditions, to opportunities for creative expression within the job. Individuals with the following degrees reported the lowest satisfaction with their degree choice: PlumbingMining EngineeringCarpentryCosmetologyAutomotive RepairMedical AdministrationComputer Administration ManagementMiscellaneous Business Medical AdministrationMilitary TechnologiesAccountingConstruction ServicesIndustrial Production TechnologiesMaterials EngineeringHospitality ManagementGeneral EducationAirport OperationsCulinary ArtsMedical AssistingOperations Logistics and E-CommerceCivil Engineering Least Meaningful College Majors Any job can feel like an absolute drag if you donât feel like the work you are doing has a beneficial impact, or indeed, any impact at all. Even if youâre making great money, it can be difficult to give a job your all if you canât wrap your head around why youâre doing it. In their 2017-18 College Salary Report, Payscale looked at the percent of individuals who believed their work made the world a better place. The list below represents the majors with the lowest percent of alumni reporting this belief. Advertising: 31 percentCommunication Design: 31 percentFashion Marketing Management: 31 percentMerchandising: 31 percentReal Estate: 31 percentApparel Merchandising: 30 percentVisual Communication Design: 30 percentComputer Animation: 29 percentTechnical Theatre: 29 percentCinema Studies: 28 percentHotel Administration: 28 percentInterior Design Merchandising: 28 percentPlastics Engineering Technology: 28 percentTextile Apparel Studies: 28 percentFashion Design: 27 percentFashion Merchandising: 27 percent Information Science: 27 percentMultimedia Web Design: 27 percentJapanese Language: 24 percentMagazine Journalism: 22 percent Factors to Consider When Choosing a Major When choosing a college major, it can be helpful to look at data (like what is shown in the lists above), but do keep in mind that the data should not necessarily have the final say. There are many other factors to consider. If youre a bit light on academic qualifications for college entry or need other ways to qualify for financial aid, certain majors that fall under the worst heading may actually give you an edge when it comes to getting accepted into the school of your choice or getting financial aid. Schools that feel certain majors are less popular or under-represented are more willing to make it easier for students to gain entry. Just because a specific degree has a low starting salary does not mean that you are âdoomedâ to receive a less-than-ideal salary for the rest of your life. Someone whoâs making $35,100 as a paralegal studies major, for example, might make the decision to go to law school and make $300,000 per year. An individual who has received an elementary education degree with a starting salary of $35,000 might decide to go back to school for her masterâs or Ph.D. and go on to become a principal. That being said, your major is also not your destiny, so to speak. Recent studies have shown that up to half of individuals surveyed reported that they did not work in a job that was âdirectly relatedâ to their major. As you advance in your career, in many cases your professional experience is more important to employers than your degree, with the exception of fields that mandate an advanced degree, such as medicine or engineering. Finally, keep in mind that, in this day and age, there is ample opportunity to make a career change, whether by way of online learning, boot camps, workshops, or certificate programs. While a specific choice of major can set you up for success, itâs important to remember that you have control over your career path; the degree you earned doesnât automatically mandate that you follow a specific profession. Itâs up to you what opportunities you pursue after you graduate. What makes a happy marriage Data shows the answer is changing
What makes a happy marriage Data shows the answer is changing What makes a happy marriage Data shows the answer is changing In 1939, World War II was just beginning to ramp up, polyester was a dream that would not come to fruition for another two years, and both women and men agreed that a dependable character and emotional stability were the two most important qualities in a marriage partner, that chastity was an absolute must, and that women needed good looks more than intelligence. A lot has changed since then- more wars, more synthetic materials, and, according to a 2013 study that tracked marriage expectations, a massive shift in expectations for our partners. Todayâs marriages are no longer about consistency and convenience. They are about mutual support and understanding. (Needless to say, things have gotten trickier.)Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Fortunately, data can help make sense of what may be the most complicated social issue most modern Americans face: What is reasonable to expect from a marriage? Hereâs the data that demonstrates what makes a happy marriage, then and now.A Womanâs Happy Marriage: Love And Good LooksThe 2013 study examined results from a survey that asked people what they seek in a spouse across several decades, dating back to 1939. The women of 1939 were largely preoccupied with maturity, emotional stability, and ambition, and ranked these as the three most important qualities in a man. Much of this has changed. In 1939, women ranked good looks as the 17th most important quality in a man, out of 18. That rank rose to a formidable 12 by 2008. Meanwhile, the importance of chastity plummeted from rank 10 to the very bottom, 18. Love, once considered only the fifth most important factor, had risen to number one.The same study suggests that the men of 1939 were not unlike the women of their time. Their top three priorities were a dependable character, maturity, and âa pleasing dispositionâ. But over the decades this, too, shifted . Intelligence and sociability, qualities that men had ranked 11th and 12th in 1939, respectively, had risen to ranks 4 and 6 by 2008. The importance of finding a woman who was a good housekeeper or cook decreased and the emphasis upon meeting someone with good financial prospects went up. As with women, the importance of chastity fell from rank 10 all the way down to rank 18, and love saw a resurgence.A Closer Look At Changes In ChastityThese shifts say something about how gender roles have changed over time. As women entered the workforce, finding an intelligent and sociable woman with good financial prospects has become a priority for men; with changes in public perception of sexuality, perhaps women feel more comfortable in 2008 admitting that they, too, want a spouse that they find attractive. But one change that stands out is the de-emphasis upon not engaging in premarital sex. Chastity has gone from a deal-breaker for many couples to a mere afterthought, in a few decades. An d thatâs a good thing, too- because chastity itself is in decline.Data on premarital sex over time suggests that men and women could afford to hang onto these biases even well into the 1970s, when more than 60 percent of women responded on surveys that they had been with one or no partners prior to marriage. In 2010, however, 73 percent of married women reported that they had two or more partners before they settled down. Only five percent were âchasteâ.This article originally appeared on Fatherly. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019
Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019 Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019 My social media streams are crowded with tales of professional woe during the year that was, immediately followed by vows to do everything differently next year.A few intrepid souls offered to share their stories, though most asked to keep things anonymous to protect their careers! The passive/aggressive trapJennifer N. wrote in an email: âI let my annoyance at a project (super complicated, lengthy, research-heavy, reference-heavy, scope creeped, not right for me with not near enough pay by FAR) come through in my correspondence with my client. I felt put upon and taken advantage of and completely underpaid and I let it show in my tone and word choice. But that was not HER problem.âJennifer realized only too late that because of the aggravation factor, she was starting to lose perspective.âI thought I was reigning it in a bit, but in retrospect my distaste was loud and clear.â she said. âAlso, I somehow thought that by communicating some things â" the not enough pay, scope creep, and that I wouldnât be interested in additional work â" it would somehow make it better. It didnât. I regret not just keeping my mouth shut, finishing whatever was needed and acting more professional.âNext yearâs plan: If youâre feeling resentful, discuss it with a client or colleague, or suck it up and negotiate for better terms the next time. Slowly simmering gets in the way of your doing the best job possible.Letting the ball dropJ.D. went to a conference in late 2017 and didnât follow up on any of the one-on-one meetings she had.âI had no confidence in my pitches.â More than that âIâm wasnât feeling very confident at all that year. I tried to fake my way through it but had convinced myself that everyone but me belonged there. In a way, I proved myself right, because I didnât do the follow-up. Only after I started working on a personal passion project was I able to conquer that BS.âJ.D. returned to returned to the conference again this year but h ad an outlined plan for follow up. âI restored my confidence by being better prepared.âNext yearâs plan: If you think youâre going to fail at something, chances are good that you will. Donât force yourself into a situation that canât have a positive outcome. Instead, plan extensively for the next time when youâll have a better chance to succeed.Set more achievable goalsAlice L. admitted to having set an unachievable goal for 2018 and that set her up for failure: âWhen the opportunity presented itself, I had to back out because I was not set up properly to take on the project.âAlice was devasted but realized that if she wanted to take on a program of that magnitude, sheâd have to change her entire way of working.Next yearâs plan: Donât jump at opportunities simply because theyâre there. Figure out goals that are both manageable and also work well with your overall success plan before you leap!Manage your time wellPublishing industry editor Julie S. held mult iple contracts with a publishing house: âA per-book agreement for development editing work, and an imprint management job where I was responsible for streamlining a lot of the publication steps with authors.âShe admits that âI always saw the imprint manager gig as gravy money, and it was a bit of a nuisance because it popped up all over the day and usually ran over the set hours allowed for it every week.âJulie said, âI didnât understand my time division well. When the imprint closed unexpectedly, I thought it would be a good thing because now my day was devoted only to the higher paying work.âShe soon lined up a contract with another publisher and thought sheâd have more time for freelance projects. What happened instead was that some of the projects proved to be time sucks. Instead of making double the money, she was spending more time on each project and her bottom line suffered. Her solution? She cut out the middleman and launched Mount Everbest, a direct to auth or subscription membership site.Next yearâs plan: Factor in the actual time you spend on each project. The old adage about not counting your chickens before theyâre hatched rings true. Before you say yes to more work or responsibility, try to figure out how many hours youâll actually need.

Revealed The 20 Companies with the Best Pay Gaps Between CEOs and Workers
Revealed The 20 Companies with the Best Pay Gaps Between CEOs and Workers Revealed The 20 Companies with the Best Pay Gaps Between CEOs and Workers We recently released a new visualization highlighting companies with the largest pay gaps between their CEOs and their average worker. The latest SEC rule requiring companies to publish these figures doesnât always mean that a company is put in a negative light. In fact, the figures also indicate the companies where the average Joe and a CEO arenât so far apart on the pay scale.Check out the figures here. Similar to our previous article, we found our numbers through the AFL-CIO, a labor union with an interest in the wellbeing of normal workers. We placed a photo of each CEO directly above his or her compensation and the median workerâs pay. We then drew a circle representing the gap between the two CEOs. This approach lets you quickly see which companies compensate their CEOs and average workers at about the same levels.Pay ratios can be a tricky thing because there are two ways to make it onto this list. First, as you might expect, a company can pay its workers an extrem ely high wage, usually in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is most commonly seen in technology companies like Facebook or Saleforce.com. Many of the other companies on the list are small tech startups. The people who work for these companies are in very high demand, and their companies are forced to pay higher wages as a result. This in turn creates a favorable pay ratio in our visualization. But a company doesnât necessarily have to pay its workers a great wage to create a better pay ratio. Instead, a company might pay its CEO a nominal salary because he or she is already independently wealthy. This would have the effect of artificially closing the gap between the chief executive and average workers. Berkshire Hathaway, the top company in terms of pay ratios, is a case in point. Warren Buffett is already worth about $85 billion, so itâs not like the company can incentivize him with a high salary. The last thing worth mentioning is that companies have a lot of discretio n over what they count in these numbers. For example, companies can decide whether to include employees of subsidiaries when calculating median pay. Suppose a company has lots of underpaid contractors doing the real work, while relatively few people enjoy regular employment status. In fact, some of the names listed on our visualization donât pass the smell test. Itâs very likely they excluded most of their workforce in coming up with these numbers, but we wonât mention their names here. One more thing: these companies have the lowest pay gaps between CEOs and average workers, but pause for a moment. The lowest pay gaps are still 30 to 50 times the average personâs income. For every $1.00 the average Joe brings home, the average CEO on our list makes $38.80. Although these pay gaps arenât that big compared to the rest of corporate America, thereâs still a massive difference in compensation.Data: Table 1.1

Google is making it easier to reschedule your meetings
Google is making it easier to reschedule your meetings Google is making it easier to reschedule your meetings Are you free this Thursday? How about Friday afternoon? Okay then, how about next week between the hours of 10 a.m.-11 a.m.? If youâre an employee planning a meeting time, you have likely been caught in this endless cycle of âavailability when?â emails. But now, Google is introducing a better way with its new Google Calendar feature.Google Calendar makes it easier to propose a new meeting timeWhen you get a meeting invite on Google Calendar in the near future, you can respond with âYes,â âNo,â Maybe,â and now, âPropose a new time.â The new proposal feature cuts out the middleman of email chatter and lets you reschedule within the app.If you have calendar access to the other meeting participantsâ schedules, you will be able to see attendeesâ availability all at once, so that you can quickly figure out the one time that works for everyone. You can even write an optional message after you choose to propose a new time so that you can add context to your choice.â This allows for richer communication between attendees, reduces time spent on meeting practicalities, and makes meetings more productive with key stakeholders in attendance,â Google said in a blog post. The company said the new feature is available on the web now and is going to be released on mobile on August 13th.

Job Interviewers 5 Mistakes to Avoid
Job Interviewers 5 Mistakes to Avoid Job Interviewers 5 Mistakes to Avoid In the world of recruiting blogs, job search forums, and career blogs, plenty gets said about the best practices for candidates during the all important interview process. Whatâs less frequently addressed are proper approach for those on the hiring end of the equation. Job interviews are the primary method for evaluating your companyâs newest employee asset. Setting yourself up for success by conducting the best interview possible can have a huge impact on ensuring you pick the best quality candidate for the job at hand. With that in mind, here are five top mistakes to avoid for any prospective job interviewer. 1. Failing to Interview Prep One of the top pieces of advice for recruits looking to score that next big job role is to prepare, prepare, prepare. File this one into the practice what you preach category. Employers looking to hire top talent should also do their research prior to sitting down at the interview table to ensure the short amount of time with your chosen candidates is productive and beneficial to the decision making process. Be sure to review resumes and cover letters before the scheduled interview time to avid five minutes of awkward silence as you quickly cram in relevant facts with the interviewee in the room. If your company is working with a recruiter, give the pre-interview questionnaire a once over or ask the hiring professionalâs honest opinion of the candidate. Each of these steps will allow you to ask better interview questions of the prospective employee and will help avoid the need for repetitive call backs or email follow up with the candidate due to forgotten or overlooked questions. 2. Failing to Highlight Company Culture While overall experience, salary expectations and education are key qualifications for any job opening, hiring partners that fail to also assess whether an interviewee matches up with a companyâs core ethics, values and work practices is missing out on a vital piece of data when it comes to individual employability. If your company has strict standards regarding timeliness or values independence and the ability to work on oneâs own, interviewers should ensure their candidates possess these traits in order to avoid employee turnover. In addition, selling your companyâs positive culture characteristics can help land that exceptional candidate. In todayâs job market, top talent often holds the bargaining chips and affirmative and positive qualities such as commitment to employee growth or an open feedback policy can tip the scales in your favor. Make a list ahead of time or peruse your company website to nail down the fundamental core values of the workplace and then work them into your introductory interview remarks. 3. Leaving Job Expectations Unclear When it comes to interviewer mistakes, perhaps one of the most costly overlooked pieces of information is the key tasks, duties and requirements of the position. Broadly categorized as job expectations, failing to convey these critical elements of resposibility can leave potential candidates in the dark as to their daily duties. This can create confusion in the initial days of employment, a critical time for creating a smooth and seamless onboarding process. Consider bringing the job listing into the interview room and spend some time reviewing it with the candidate, point by point. This is also a great opportunity to nail down how the individual feels theyâd perform in each of the job roles, as well as address any strengths or shortcomings based on their prior experience. 4. Putting Too Much Stock in Social Media In todayâs increasingly connected and tech savvy society itâs inevitable that your candidates will have some kind of social media presence. Savvy interviewers know that a few minutes of searching publicly available information on these sites can help identify problem behaviors in candidates and pinpoint potential red flags. Social media research of your candidates, however, can also be a double edged sword. Ruling out an otherwise qualified candidate due to a few pictures of them drinking at a yacht party would be a grave mistake unless supporting evidence during your interview made you believe the individual was less than dedicated and hardworking. In short, use social media to rule out candidates who would be an obvious poor fit with your company or team culture, but donât rush to throw the baby out with the bathwater if they have a preference for sharing silly cat memes. 5. Being Overly Aggressive or Intimidating We all can appreciate a well crafted interview question that asks prospective candidates to describe their work style or preferred communication method. Attempting to game the system, though, with the use of elaborate problem solving exercises, overly aggressive or direct interviewing styles or otherwise coming on too strong can scare away otherwise qualified potential employees. Avoid taking the âwhy should I give you this jobâ approach and instead focus on creating a genuine dialog with the candidate. Talking about ideas and experience in a given field will tell you a lot more than whether the interviewee can make eye contact during a hard line of interrogation, designed to do little more than make candidates squirm. In Conclusion The bottom line is that interviewees should show the same amount of respect, preparation and importance to the interview process as the individual candidates. Leading by example is a great way to start off any working relationship and setting a professional and thoughtful tone during the interview will go a long way towards communicating those expectations to job seekers. Make the most out of your interviews with productive and well-designed questions and youâll end up with better potential candidates and potentially saving your company in terms of reduced employee turnover and more talented hires.

The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume
The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume Remember the Friends episode where Phoebe discovers Joeyâs resume is riddled with skills like tap dancing, archery and horseback riding, none of which he actually knows how to do? Joeyâs reasoning for including the faux skills? He could technically do those things if he tried, just not well. Like Joey, many job seekers elaborate parts of their resumes to make them seem like a better match for the position. In some ways, exaggerating your resume is a big no-no. However, there are certain aspects of your professional history that can and should be exaggerated a bit. Weâve laid out clearly the dos and donâts of exaggerating on your resume to help guide you through the writing process. Do Elaborate: Perspective Be straightforward about your professional history, but use a perspective that makes them as positive as possible. For example, if you fell short of a goal but still showed impressive gain, a statement like, âIncreased sales by 20%â reflects much better than âReached 20% of my 50% sales goalâ. Never lie about your history, just figure out how to show it in the best light. Wording Applicant tracking systems have made the importance of specific wording a major part of resume writing. Now, hiring managers will search resumes based on the job title. For example, if you are applying for a job with the title âSocial Media Coordinatorâ and your previous job title was âSocial Media Expertâ, it is acceptable (and advised) to use the title âSocial Media Coordinatorâ for that position on your resume, as long as the job requirements for each match. If you feel more comfortable, you can put your exact previous title in parentheses beside the new one. Specific Skills The number one sign of an ATS optimized resume is the use of relevant skills. Skills/keywords are the words that are used repeatedly in a job posting. These keywords might be specific programs like âPhotoshopâ or âAdobe Dreamweaverâ, or skills like âSpanish fluencyâ. You should always pick out the keywords from each job posting and weave them into your resumeas long as they are truthful. Donât Elaborate: Dates Dates of employment can accentuate gaps in work history, but that isnât a reason to lie by extending them beyond your actual time of employment. Having periods of unemployment is hugely common and frequently seen by hiring managers, so you shouldnât feel like you need to hide them. Include correct dates (which help the ATS sort your work history properly) and answer honestly any questions about the gaps in later interviews. Nonexistent Skills Sorry Joey! Claiming you have skills that you donât will only get you into trouble later. Even if you land the job based on false skills, youâll end up falling short of expectations early on. If none of the skills/keywords in the job posting apply to you, it might be a sign that the job isnât the right fit for you. Move on to job postings with keywords that you can honestly mirror in your resume. Education and Certifications Unfortunately, thereâs no wiggle room when it comes to education. For example, if a job position requires a bachelorâs degree and you have an associateâs degree, exaggerating is not an option. You can still apply if you think youâre a great match, but be honest about your level of education and let the hiring manager decide how much it matters. The same goes for certifications; be straightforward to avoid later issues. Bending your work history to fit a job is not necessarily a bad tactic, as long as you know which pieces are tweak-able and which shouldnât be messed with. Keep it honest and positive and your resume will end up landing you the perfect job.
